July and August are hot - and many Europeans are on "holiday" or vacation during the month of August - Why? Because they do not have air conditioning and it is hot!

I have been in Italy twice - both times in the Spring. The weather was perfect (70's) and there were not crowds of people.

My vote is late March to May time frame.

Depends on where in Italy I guess...I went to Rome in November about 3 years ago and it was gorgeous. Plus, fewer tourists were there so it wasn't as crowded. Weather stayed around 50-70F and only 1 day of rain in the week we were there. Hotels will be cheaper as well in the off season.

I say July or August.
