To learn the most it would be ideal to date a person from the region... if that can happen then hit the local book store. There are many different books about Italy. Culture varies from region to region. Naples, Rome, Milan, and Sicily all have slightly different cultures and a differnt dilect of language. Books are the best for this since you can concentrate on a specific area.
Culture -most are catholic
Riposo - its luch time but lasts usually from 1pm-4pm in which time you eat with the family and take a nap.
August is national tourist month, where many Italians go on vacation.
These are the biggest things I have noticed since living here for the last 4 years.
Also if you see two men riding on a scooter they are not homosexual, they are just friends. And yes even the 12 year olds probably dont have permits to ride scooters but the police look the other way.

The best thing is to travel to Italy of course. Alternatively, this blog can give you some good insights on the Italian culture and lifestyle: http://www.italyfrominside.com
